I am backing blu-ray and HD. Both are developed by the industry heavy weights. Sony= Blu-Ray
Toshiba= HD
Whilst sony appears to have the advantage with its PS3 and high-profile support, Toshiba is not to be underistemated, it too is now gaining more support by some big names.
Time will be the best test. Some trends I have noticed, where by some stores are selling both DVD formats side-by-side, oppose to exclusivity.

Not true. Blu Ray could be just as soon out of the market, due to low marginal profits.

HD DVD Death Doesn't Necessarily Mean Sony Win -------
HD DVD's demise means Sony's in the clear? Not so fast! Put away those champagne bottles! Bloomberg's here to crap on Sony's party, pointing out that all this doesn't mean smooth sailing. There are 176 companies in the Blu-ray Disc Association, including Sony competitors Samsung and Panasonic. They're not necessarily buddies! They're competing. This is business, not summer camp!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interesting factoid: Before Sony released the PS3, HD DVD occupied 64 percent of HD format sales, and now Blu-ray accounts for 65 percent. The ironic bit: While Sony built up big Blu-ray support with the PS3, it doesn't solely own the technology. Sony must split royalties with other members of the Blu-ray association like Samsung and Panasonic - the same members Sony is battling with for market share! Says Morgan Stanley's Tokyo-based analyst Masahiro Ono:
"Sony's Blu-ray hardware business model isn't very profitable. Even if it's profitable next year, we can't expect a high margin."
Bloomberg points out that Sony in the videotape format war, Sony's Betamax format lost to Victor Co.'s VHS. And what did that VHS win mean for Victor? Not much! Stock prices tumbled, its market share crumbled, and Victor isn't nearly what it was in 1980. That's right! Doom, doom, DOOM.

they are now the preffered next HD format. they won. so why dont they mention DVD? surely that was a succes...
of course its not going to be smooth sailing but sony do have the most fastest, powerful boat out there. and just like dvd in the ps2, the ps3 is acting like the trojan horse to get blu-ray into homes. and analysts expect ps3 sales to go up 10% with BR's win.

You're almost attacking me about this. I don't own a HD player, but I wanted to provide both sides of the story.

I'm sorry bit it does definnitly means sony wins (one part of the story). Sony wins because it gonna be build-in in (most of) the new laptops, pc and of course stand alone Blu-ray players. On the other hand it's not only SONY who wins. Its being developt by lots of company's (or supported) like:
Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Sun Microsystems, TDK, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney en Warner Bros.
So it wins but its not that sony wins.
Oh and jezza take it easy on shadow, on some points he is RIGHT!
